Connye Teague Rodriguez gained her broadcasting knowledge not with a degree but strictly from “on the job” experience. And would spend her entire 40-plus-year career where it started…at Swanson Broadcasting’s KKYX in San Antonio. It all began for Connye in 1979 when a friend’s mother who worked at KKYX offered her a job the summer after she graduated from high school. With no broadcast education or experience, Connye joined KKYX as the receptionist.
By August of that year, Connye had moved from the front desk to work as assistant to Traffic, Bookkeeping, and Sales. Three years later, she was promoted to full-time manager of the Traffic-Continuity department.
In addition to her duties in Traffic, Connye also worked most station promotional events becoming the KKYX “Promotions Department” long ago, before there even were promotion departments!
When the station joined the Cox Media Group, Connye’s work expanded from one station to multiple stations when she became the Traffic Specialist for KKYX, KONO and Y-100.
Over the years, Connye has enjoyed meeting numerous well-known music artists at concerts and events, and especially at the radio studios when they would drop by if they were in town for a concert, or to promote their latest single.
Connye will never forget the day an unknown local artist came in to drop off his latest single at the studios. As Jerry King prepared to play the record, the young man suddenly disappeared. He had run out to the parking lot, jumped in his truck and driven off. George Strait wanted to hear his song on the radio for the first time!
Connye has been recognized as a leader in her profession receiving the “Sammy Award” for General Radio Team Member from the San Antonio Media Alliance in 2006. She has also received numerous Employee of the Month awards from Cox Radio-San Antonio as well as the Cox Employee of the Year award in 2010.
