Hector Reyes began his 28-year career in radio in 1973 at San Antonio College where he was enrolled in the RTF program, and where he would meet John Rosales, who was to be his future radio partner, Sonny Rio. After college, the two close friends went their separate ways. John to El Paso radio and Hector staying in San Antonio to make his own inroads on local radio.
He started out answering phones for Charlie Brown for a dollar an hour. From there, he took a part-time job at KTFM. Hector was like a utility baseball player, doing whatever was needed. Weekends or filling in wherever they needed a warm body. He would move to the Rio Grande Valley for a short time, but returned to KTFM for a full-time gig doing overnights.
About this time, Sonny Rio returned and took over the 6-10 pm slot on KTSA…and the old friends were together again, in a manner of speaking. Though they weren’t one the air together, the chemistry and fun was still happening. They even made guest appearances on each other’s shows!
Rio left for KSAQ in the early 80s and Hector followed a couple years later. The two were doing afternoons for Inner City Broadcasting, and when PD Leo Vela recognized their chemistry, the Morning Team of Rio and Reyes was born. The duo had no ratings to begin with, but soon became one of the top 5 contenders in the market.
In 1986, Rio and Reyes moved to KSMG, Magic 105, where they were Number One with adults in the first ratings book that came out. They would remain with Magic until 1993 when the duo moved to the Rio Grande Valley. In 2000, they returned to the Alamo City and were on the air at KCJZ until 2002.
During his long career, Hector was also Production Director for several stations. He attributes his longevity in radio to all the people he met and worked with along the way. Today Hector and his long-time radio partner can be heard on the Internet at RioandReyes.com.
